Obituary for Derya Gulten Satir
Derya Gulten Satir February 16, 1968 – November 23, 2018
“For every end, there is always a new start.” -posted by Derya, March 14, 2017.
Loving mother, devoted daughter, and cherished sister, Derya Satir of Naperville, Illinois, passed away early Friday morning, November 23, 2018. Derya, who battled brain cancer for over 19 months, died with her family at her bedside. She was 50 years old.
Derya was the youngest of five children born to Kemal and Gulten Satir in Spokane, Washington. She is survived by her 11 year-old son Colin Juhn; her former husband Mark Juhn; mother Gulten Satir; siblings Deniz Satir, Filiz Satir, Cengiz Satir and Yasemin Tedeschi; sister-in-law Anne Satir and brother-in-law Mark Tedeschi; nieces Alex and Gabi Tedeschi, Leyla and Ana Satir and nephew Vic Satir. She is also survived by a large extended family in Turkey.
Born February 16, 1968, Derya grew up in Spokane, Washington, where she attended Joel E. Ferris High School, and she later graduated from the University of Washington in 1992. From a young age, Derya was an accomplished flutist, and also developed a passion for the french language, learning to speak with the fluency of a native speaker. At UW she was an active member of the French Club, and traveled to France on several different occasions.
After college, Derya began a career in finance working for Key Corporate Bank and later Laird Norton Company in Seattle. In 2003, she moved with her husband to Chicago and began working for Carr Futures, later acquired by the French investment banking firm, Société Générale, putting her french skills to good use. She gave birth to a son, Colin, in 2007, raised him bilingual (french), and joined his dad in cheering him on at his ice hockey games.
Derya left Société Générale in January 2017, planning to take a few months off to spend more time with her son and consider career options. She also surprised her loving mother by taking her on a memorable mother-daughter vacation to Cancún, Mexico.
In April 2017, Derya was diagnosed with a grade 3 brain cancer, otherwise known as an anaplastic astrocytoma. For 19 months and 21 days, she courageously battled this horrible disease. And in the end, she won the fight - conquering brain cancer by leaving this world in order to find peace in the next. She also sparked a life-long commitment in family members and friends to promote brain cancer awareness.
There is only one Derya, and she will be missed dearly by her son, her family and all those she touched. Her radiance, generosity, and love of life will never, ever be forgotten.
